Sponsor Your Parents for Permanent Residence in Canada
Bringing your parents or grandparents to Canada as permanent residents involves a process that requires patience and understanding of the eligibility criteria. Here’s what you need to know to navigate this journey successfully.
Yearly Draw and Application Process
To sponsor your parents or grandparents for Permanent Residence (PR), you must participate in a yearly draw conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Approximately 20,000 invitations are issued each year, and individuals must wait to be selected before applying. It’s crucial to ensure eligibility before entering the draw to avoid application refusal.
Once selected, applicants have 60 days to submit a complete application to IRCC. Failure to provide a comprehensive application within this timeframe will result in rejection. The process has transitioned to electronic, online submission, enhancing efficiency and accessibility.
Sponsor Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to sponsor your parents or grandparents, you must:
- Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident aged 18 or older.
- Meet or exceed the minimum necessary income (MNI) requirement for Family Sponsorship.
- Sign an undertaking agreement committing to provide financial support for the sponsored family members for 20 years and repay any provincial social assistance benefits received by them.
- Provide three Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to IRCC as proof of meeting the MNI requirement.
If you do not meet the MNI for the required three-year period, you can explore alternative options such as applying for a Super Visa, which has a lower income requirement for a one-year period.
